A broad category of activity that encompasses entertainment ranging from the selection of private entertainment products for an individual; to banquets adapted for two; to performances geared for a thousand; and on to world-wide audiences. Generally understood as a form of recreation, it is defined objectively, involves communication between text and audience, provides external stimulus, offers pleasure to the consumer, and requires audience passivity. (Oliver and Barstsch, 2010; Bates and Ferri, 2012).
