The Daily News at Yale
The Daily News is a tabloid newspaper published in New York City. It is America’s first tabloid newspaper and was founded in 1919. The Daily News is known for its sensational headlines, lurid photographs, and intense city news coverage as well as its celebrity gossip, classified ads, and comics. It is also well known for its hard-hitting journalism and strong sourcing. The Daily News has a left-leaning editorial position but has a high fact check record and is reliable overall.
A New York native, I am very sad to see the Daily News going downhill in the last few years. As a reader, I have noticed the quality of the writing has gone down and the website is becoming hopelessly cluttered with pop up ads that make it difficult to navigate. I have also seen that the newspaper is ignoring the needs of its reader base by not focusing on community news stories. This is not the Daily News I grew up with and I hope that in the future they will get back to their roots and start serving the readers they serve.
Daily News is a free, weekly newspaper that provides information and entertainment for the Yale community. It features articles, interviews and columns written by students and alumni of the university, as well as sports and cultural events involving Yale, the city of New Haven and surrounding areas. The newspaper is a product of the Great Lakes Commission and serves as a portal for news from professional media outlets throughout the region.
In its first year as a standalone publication, the Yale Daily News received the Gold Crown Award from the Society of Professional Journalists and was named Newspaper of the Year by the New York Press Association. The newspaper also publishes the Yale Daily News Magazine and several special issues each year in partnership with the university’s cultural centers and affiliated student groups.

The Daily News, once a dominant force in American politics and journalism, is now a struggling newspaper under the ownership of the hedge fund Alden Global Capital, which bought Tribune Publishing in late 2017. The paper has been shuttered for days, its journalists working without pay and many of its freelancers fearing they will soon be laid off.
The Daily News has a left-leaning political bias and a high level of reliability, according to Ad Fontes Media. Sources with an AllSides media bias rating of Left exhibit a clear lean to the left on editorial positions and often use loaded words that appeal to emotion or stereotypes to promote liberal agendas. Generally, these sources have a moderate to severe liberal bias and are less trustworthy for factual reporting. Read the full report here.
