The act of entertaining, and the things that are entertained, have varied throughout history. Activities that were once used in hunting or war have become spectator sports, and activities that began as hobbies have evolved into professional careers and even into a global competition.

The word entertainer is sometimes abbreviated to entmt, for example on a flier or in industry news publications when space is at a premium. However, it is not often abbreviated in general use.
