Results Analysis March and April 2009 - by Andre de Vries

March and April saw both the high and low points in world title fights involving South Africans. Unquestionably, in one of the best local fights seen for a long, long
time, Malcolm Klassen outboxed, outfought and nearly outclassed Cassius Baloyi to regain the IBF jnr lightweight title he surrendered to Mzonke Fana back in April 2007. Klassen was surprisingly strong at the weight, and his hand speed and power were the decisive factors. Baloyi stated that he might still continue at the ripe old age of 34 (for a boxer!), but I can’t help wondering if time, and twenty five world title fights have not left their mark on one of our most distinguished champions.

At the opposite end of the scale, Vusi Malinga was stopped in the first round in Japan in a challenge for the WBC bantamweight title. Malinga was dropped 3
times, forcing the referee to stop the carnage. Malinga has proven to be a tough
opponent a WBC International level, and perhaps deserves a chance to fight his
way back into contention for another title fight.

Locally, Oscar Chauke put up a magnificent challenge against Takalani Ndlovu
for the vacant WBF featherweight title, relinquishing his WBF junior featherweight title in the process. Ndlovu was expected to win easily, but Chauke pushed him all the way to a narrow points decision.

Zolani Marali outpointed Gamaliel Diaz of Mexico in a dull encounter to stake his
4th claim to a world title belt, having previously held the IBO junior feather, WBF
junior feather and WBF junior light titles. Stiffer opposition is needed before Marali can claim any place amongst the likes of Brian Mitchell, Welcome Ncita, Vuyani Bungu one of South Africa’s boxing heroes.

Locally, Chris van Heerden produced a typical workmanlike performance to outpoint November Ntshingila over twelve rounds to retain the South African welterweight title for the 2nd time. Van Heerden’s ABU belt was not on the line.
