Results Analysis: Jan/Feb '13 by André de Vries

When is a 12-round fight a 10-round fight? When All Black rugby legend Sonny Bill Williams is about to get his head knocked off by 44-year-old Fransie Botha, that’s when. No doubt, Botha was robbed to save Williams’ reputation.

It’s always sad to see really good sportsman come to the end of the line. Father time invariably wins, and Isaac Hlatshwayo and Mzonke Fana should get out while they can. Both are on the wrong side of 35, and both have been well beaten in recent fights by fighters who should not even have come close.

Nobody really gave Hekkie Budler much of a chance on his early performances in the pro ring, but he has shown what can be achieved by hard work, dedication and a dogged will to succeed. So often, those like him triumph over those blessed with an abundance of natural talent. Chris van Heerden is another who has exceeded expectations, and overcame a bad cut to outpoint Matthew Hatton to retain the IBO welterweight title. These two are outstanding role models for all aspiring young boxers.
