Results Analysis February 2012 by Andre de Vries

Showpony Promotions certainly made a name for themselves with five world title fights on one bill in November, and hopefully, they will become a fixture on the local scene. T he acid test for this outfit will be how (or if) they handle the development of their own talent, or if they are going to pick up the leftovers from the more established promotional bodies. Perhaps a working arrangement with the others just to get going in the business?

It was heart-breaking to see Fransie Botha get flattened with just a few seconds to go against Michael Grant for the vacant WBF heavyweight title when he had the fight in the bag. Willie Pep, the great featherweight champion once said “the first thing to go is your legs, then your reflexes, then your friends”. The general consensus is that punching power is the last thing to go, and Grant proved that with a 12th-round ko.

Perhaps the hard fights Botha had against some-time heavyweight champions Michael Moorer, Mike Tyson, Shannon Briggs, Lennox Lewis, Wladimir Klitschko and Evander Holyfield have taken their toll on an ageing Botha, now 43 years old. What a career Botha has had, and it would be sad to him overstaying his welcome in the toughest sport of all.

Doctor Ntsele did very well to come back after the death of Anele Makhwelo, his
last opponent, to stop Mkholisi Bhonxa in defence of the National flyweight title.
