Just when you think you have seen it all – along comes
Golden Gloves to take boxing to another level. All for
the good I might add. The Golden Gloves Super 8 series
kicks off on June 16 at Emperors Palace and will continue
throughout the year to the final in November. The Super 8
Cruiserweight is the first division to be contested. The top
8 fighters in AFRICA will be seeded and selected according
to their seeding to find the best cruiserweight in Africa. The event is sanctioned by BSA and aptly named LAST MAN STANDING. Names in the mix and in no particular order are:
ZACK MWEKASSA, DANIEL BRUWER, DANIE VENTER,
THABISO MCHUNU, FLO SIMBA, TSHEPHANG MOHALE,
JOHNNY MULLER, DANIEL ADOTEY ALLOTEY, ILUNGA
MAKABU and RUBEN GROENEWALD.
Daniel Bruwer is up against Flo Simba on 3rd March at
Emperors Palace. They are both listed to compete in the
Super 8 - if the fight is one-sided one of them will be
withdrawn. On the other hand should they both perform well they will both compete in the competition. Tommy Oosthuizen defends his title against Serge Yannick from Australia and Kaizer Mabuza gets to fight unbeaten Steve Wills for the vacant IBO junior welterweight title on March 3rd. The other interesting bout on the undercard is Joey Stiglingh against Sipho Taliwe.
This is the first issue of African Ring Magazine for 2012.
