Results Analysis – Sept 2012 - by André de Vries

There are exceptions to most rules, but Mzonke Fana demonstrated that in boxing, at least, they very seldom come back. Having only his fourth fight in four years, he was dropped three times and given a boxing lesson by Sipho Taliwe for the WBC International junior lightweight title. Generally speaking, this level of inactivity when just a month shy of turning 39 is never going to have a happy ending

Ryno Liebenberg is something else again. He soaked up the best punches that some of the game’s biggest punchers in Tshepang Mohale, Tineyi Maridzo and Johnny Muller threw at him, held his own in the early rounds, and came back to stop Mohale and Muller, and hammer Maridzo on points. Not an ideal recipe for a long and fruitful career, but so exciting while it lasts. Muller, on the other hand, has lost something in his conversion from slugger to boxer. Gone is the stunning one-punch knockout artist that had us holding our breath in anticipation.

Moruthi Mtahlane reinforced his position as the best local boxer with a stunning eighth-round stoppage of the dangerous Ricardo Nunez of Panama, in Nunez’s back yard, to retain the IBF flyweight title for the fourth time. Mthalane, who spent much of his early career flying under the radar has established himself as a star on the international scene.
