June / July 2010 Articles

What an amazing success the Soccer World Cup 2010 has been for our country, I was fortunate to see six matches live at- Soccer City, Ellis Park, Cape Town (2), Rustenburg and Durban. The vibe and atmosphere was so amazing and awesome at all the stadiums, no matter who you were supporting. “Amazing” and “Awesome” is an understatement; we loved every minute of it. I’m sure I speak for millions of people who were mainly rugby supporters like myself that will in future support both soccer and rugby.

The who’s who of the World came to South Africa, from Politicians to Hollywood Superstars - John Travolta even flew into Lanseria Airport in his own plane. Nice to see our own Oscar winning star Charlize Theron and Rolling Stones superstar Mick Jagger, (to mention a few) taking in some football. One of the highlights’ was without a doubt our President, Jacob Zuma, who has done such a sterling PR job for our country, playing a friendly soccer game along with all the other International dignitaries. The 11th July has been an amazing day for our country hosting the FIFA 2010 World Cup Final at Soccer City, but in the same breath a sad day as we say goodbye to the Greatest Sporting Show on Earth. “Viva” South Africa we are proud of you.

Back to the sport of Boxing!

I see Floyd Mayweather is complaining why Manny Pacquiao is getting Boxer of the Decade accolades; when he should, as he is still undefeated. Well that is simple, Manny is a seven time world champion in different weight divisions – a first ever and that alone makes the Filipino Pacman unique.

We still wait with baited breath to see if November 13 will materialise for the two superstars to get it on. The talk is that each fighter will earn as much as 80 million US dollars. That alone should make up their minds.
