Results Analysis – May / June 2013 by André de Vries

Shock of the year so far has to be Hekkie Budler beating Nkosinathi Joyi to retain his IBO mini flyweight title. Many around the ring had it very close, with some, including myself, scoring it for Joyi. Although Joyi looked off colour, and boxed below his best, all credit has to go to Budler for cleverly avoiding the harder punching Joyi for 12 rounds and in the process doing enough to impress the judges.

Danie Venter produced a left hook from hell to flatten the hapless Nsitu Mbaya in one round, and managed to look looked ageless in doing so. Venter is a better boxer than his record suggests (who will ever forget the ease with which he outclassed Daniel Bruwer), but his career has been hampered by a slight lack of consistency.

By contrast, the self-same Bruwer was shocking when challenging Fikile Nyalunga for the vacant SA junior heavyweight title, and was receiving a boxing lesson when he pulled one out of the bag to stop the inexperienced Nyalunga in the 11th round. The talented Bruwer looked unfit and hopelessly out of condition, and had the fight gone the distance he would surely have lost by a wide margin.

Let’s hope that Fransie Botha does what his corner should have done a long time ago – throw in the towel. He was stopped in 2 rounds by an absolute novice in New Zealand, and has clearly become a stepping stone, a “name” opponent for young hopefulls.
